Brand new site!

It's 4 days before Christmas '08; and I'm putting the final touches on this site so that I can pass it to Tim (my dad). It's about time he had a proper website as he's been performing Humanist ceremonies over the past year.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS!!

Dan

Click here for RSS feed  Thanks for setting up the website Dan! It's New Year's day now and I have spent the last two or three hours trying to get to grips with it. Still not there yet but hopefully I will have it all fine tuned soon!

Well 2009 looks as though it could be an interesting year for Humanist celebrants in Derbyshire. A small group of us are meeting in Buxton later in January (snow permitting) with a view to raising our profile, making the Humanist option more accessible for people needing an alternative! I will keep you posted on the blog.
In the mean time look out for articles in the local press and hopefully on radio too!

Anyway I am off for a glass of wine now!

Happy New Year!!

Hi, It has been a busy time over the winter months, with many requests for a Humanist funeral. For a mix of reasons more people seem to die around the begining of the year.

With a change in the weather and the approach of Spring, I guess we will be having requests for Naming ceremonies coming through soon! A wonderful local toy and children's clothing shop in Wirksworth has just agreed to carry my small advert for Humanist Naming ceremonies. Many thanks to Sally at Mini Marsdens! I have just got to sit down and design a little poster over the next few days!

It seems ages since our meeting of Derbyshire based Celebrants in Buxton. The weather was terrible that night, with snow closing in all the while we were talking.

None the less we had a good discussion and all managed to get home safely! We focussed on airing the challenges which face us and considering what we might do as a grouping, to raise our game just a little over the coming year.

Most of us have limited time, with family and other commitments. None the less we decided to meet again in April, soon after one of our members returns from her trip to New Zealand, taking that discussion a stage further!

I will report back on that meeting in my next posting.

Still planning our next meeting! Considering a talk on Humanism and the BHA at Scarthin Books in Cromford. www.scarthinbooks.com This has to be the best bookshop in Derbyshire, if not the East Midlands.

'The Cafe Philosophique' meets there more or less monthly. It starts around
7 - 7.30 with a short presentation, followed by group discussion, over home made cake and coffee! Challenging but an interesting proposition none the less!

While waiting for news of our  next BHA meeting take a look at www.maggiecullen.com displaying images of her latest sculptures and giving an update on events for the year. This includes work in preparation for her display at Yorkshire Sculpture Park www.ysp.co.uk in June! One of her pieces was commissioned last year, to commemorate the death of a much loved daughter. As you can imagine this gave enormous comfort to her parents.
